Jenkin A-lign at the Speight’s Ale House

Speights Ale House in Hamilton

The Speight’s Ale Houses are famous, and not just with the grizzled Southern men that populate the Speight’s ads. The distinctive colonial-style timber buildings, ornamented with parapets and verandahs, are bringing that Southern spirit to mates throughout New Zealand.  It’s a great combination of traditional style with contemporary hospitality. That’s why we were delighted when Arran Pene and Mark Sharp chose Jenkin A-lign for the cladding of the Speight’s Ale House in Hamilton. Jenkin A-lign takes the timber tradition and combines it with modern design and machining to deliver a contemporary cladding system.

“I like the fact that A-lign is BRANZ appraised and has pre-cut internal and external scribers available. I enjoy the assurance of a support network that Jenkin have in place for dealing with details,” Mark Sharp says. “I also really like the fact that using timber is going back to our grassroots, it’s tried and true, and sustainably homegrown.”

Architect Mark de Lisle developed the plans using the Jenkin A-lign CAD details. “It worked well,” Mark says. Jenkin sales manager Brent Speers also brought in the Jenkin A-lign model so Mark and his team could see how the Jenkin A-lign system works.

From an architect’s point of view, Mark says Jenkin A-lign fills a position in the market for people wanting a plantation timber weatherboard cladding that performs well. “The fingerjointed product is strong and well controlled.”

So next time you are in Hamilton, put on your Driza-bone, saddle up your horse, whistle to the dogs, and head off to spot another one of our favourite wooden buildings. Maaaaate!
